This book is a survey of the relationship between the two Celtic and Roman traditions in Merovingian Gaul, Lombard Italy, and the British Isles during the period of the Easter controversy. Corning argues that the three main areas of conflict between the two traditions were the baptismal liturgy, the style of tonsure, and, more importantly, the correct dating of Easter. Corning believes that the Easter controversy was a very serious issue in the early medieval Church for both practical and theological reasons, rather than one which concerned only a few. Outside these areas of controversy, however, the two traditions peacefully exchanged practices and ideas.
