The work of Ramón Menéndez Pidal remains central to modern understandings of Medieval Spanish culture, while his ideas, insights, and opinions continue to exert a powerful influence on contemporary scholarship. This volume, arising from a meeting of the Magdalen Iberian Medieval Studies Seminar at Magdalen College, Oxford, explores this enduring legacy. After an introduction in which the connections between Menéndez Pidal and Oxford are mapped out (Conde), the contributions engage with the full range of the fields of Menéndez Pidal’s research: Spanish medieval literature, especially epic poetry (Deyermond), ballads (Coates) and historiography (Pattison); Spanish history (Barton), the history of the Spanish language (Wright) and Hispanic dialectology (Fernández-Ordóñez). This volume provides a thorough assessment of Menéndez Pidal’s scholarly contributions and their importance over the years, and an exploration of his influence on theories and methods in recent scholarship.
