Abstract: One of the most complex problems that faced the transition to
democracy between 1988 and 1994 was the continuity of the actions of
political violence. Organizations like the FPMR, the MAPU-Lautaro and
MIR, which resorted to armed struggle as preferred form of political action,
have threatened the stability of the democratic institutions. However,
the rapid defeat of the insurgency is related to the effectiveness of the
repressive work and to the loss of social base of subversive groups.
