Abstract: This article analyzes the social and civic experiences of Spanish
republican women in a period when the «republican hope» was shaken
by the changes of strategies in its political mentors, the different interpretations
of the notion «republic», the family divisions, and the personal
confrontations between leaders. To confront this situation, the
freethinking, secular and anticlerical alternative became the focal point
of the discourse and the sociocultural practices of many associations
of republican women. Their leaders carried out a policy of supportive
agreements and decided to defend a freethinker, social and anticlerical
republic. In a context where the role that women should play in the «new regime» was often discussed, many of these women critiziced
what they considered the lack of resolution of several comrades in
their ranks.
