Abstract: This article analyzes the meaning of the Second Republic from
a gender perspective. That is to say, the changes experienced by the
gender relationships in the public and private environment caused by
the new republican political and ideological context are studied in this
article, but also the limits and continuities of the cultural models. In
order to analyze both questions, the feminine vote and the divorce,
gotten both for the first time in the history of Spain in the moment
of the Second Republic, are specifically studied. This legislation had important repercussions about the public and private life of the Spanish
women. On one hand, it meant the political citizenship attainment for
the women, and therefore, the real universal vote for the first time.
On the other hand, the divorce law meant the consideration of the
marriage, also for the first time, as a susceptible contract of breakup,
as a fundamental element of the republican laity.
