La que hoy conocemos como Guerra de la Independencia se inició
con un levantamiento popular cuyo origen sigue provocando debate
entre los historiadores. Al contrario que el motín de Aranjuez, no
es fruto de una conspiración aristocrática. Sólo puede entenderse en
el contexto de la crisis que vivía España, agravada desde el otoño de
1807, que la intervención napoleónica convirtió en una situación prerrevolucionaria.
Su objetivo expreso es la defensa del rey legítimo, la
religión y la libertad o independencia de la patria. Combina rasgos reaccionarios
y revolucionarios, pero de él surgirán las Juntas que crearon
la Junta Central que convocó las Cortes de Cádiz.

Abstract: What we now know as Independence War started with a popular
uprising, the origin of which is still open to debate among historians.
As opposed to the revolt of Aranjuez, it was not the product of a conspiracy
on the part of the aristocracy. It can only be understood within
the context of the crisis Spain was going through, worsened since the
autumn of 1807, that the Napoleonic intervention changed into a prerevolutionary
situation. Its explicit aim was to defend the legitimate
monarch, religion, and the freedom and independence of the fatherland.
It is a blend of reactionary and revolutionary trends, but it is the
seed from which sprung the Juntas that gave place to the Junta Central
that summoned the Cortes in Cadiz.
