Este artículo es un estudio sobre las políticas de
fomento de la nación de Sir John A. Macdonald,
primer ministro del Canadá que llevó el gobierno
Liberal Conservador de 1867 a 1873 y entre 1878 y
1891. Sir John fue uno de los “padres de la
Confederación”, el proceso de negociación constitucional
que dio origen al dominio de Canadá con
la promulgación de la ley de América del Norte británica
de 1867. A través de lo que se conoce como
las políticas de fomento de la nación, Sir John
transformó entidades territoriales dispares y de -
sagregadas que se reunieron por un acto del
Parlamento británico en una nación transcontinental
integrada y en el proceso se estableció una base
sólida para la transformación de Canadá en una de
las economías más avanzadas del mundo. El artículo
analiza las políticas de fomento de la nación
de Sir John, su visión para su país, y cómo él
maniobró por el laberinto de la política canadiense
para llevarla a buen término. El artículo utiliza la
experiencia canadiense como un modelo para
Nigeria cuyos ciudadanos anhelan para el desarrollo
y construcción de la nación.

Abstract: The article is a study on the nation-building policies
of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime
minister who led the Liberal Conservative government
from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891.
Sir John was one of the ‘fathers of Confederation,’
the constitutional negotiation process that gave
birth to the Dominion of Canada with the enactment
of the British North American Act in 1867.
Through what became known as the nation-building
policies, Sir John transformed disparate and
disaggregated territorial entities brought together
by an act of the British parliament into an integrated
transcontinental nation and in the process
laid a solid foundation for the transformation of
Canada into one of the most advanced economies
in the world. The article analyzes Sir John’s nationbuilding
policies, his vision for his country, and
how he manoeuvred through the maze of
Canadian politics to bring these into fruition. The

de la nation de Sir John A. Macdonald, premier
ministre du Canada qui a dirigé le gouvernement
conservateur libéral de 1867 à 1873 et entre
1878 et 1891. Sir John était l’un des «Pères de la
Confédération», le processus de négociation constitutionnelle
qui a mené au Dominion du Canada
avec la promulgation de la loi Amérique du Nord
