Abstract: This article analyzes Madrid and Barcelona positions in the international
theatre market at the end of the 19th century and beginning of
the 20th. It aims at describing the role of theatre producers (impresarios,
editors, playwrights and composers) as international and national cultural
agents. It shows how they were able to participate both in the acceleration
of cultural goods’ global circulation after 1860, and in the affirmation
of Spanish and Catalan nationalisms. This study also reveals the
peculiarity of the cultural map of the two capital cities, with a European
space of theatre importation quite different from its Iberian and Hispano-
Atlantic space of cultural exportation.
