Abstract: This essay is a reflection on three topics that are different but interrelated.
Firstly, it deals with the bicentennial commemorations, with
some of the implications of every commemoration and, mainly, with what
it is exactly that we are commemorating in Spain and Latin America. Secondly,
this essay establishes the relation between bicentennial commemorations
and liberalism, and considers the reasons why «el liberalismo
hispánico» will play an important role in these commemorations. Lastly,
this essay is a critique of some contemporary historiographic tendencies
or schools that, beyond their pertinence in many aspects, put into practice
methodologies —in the author’s view—, ending up intellectualizing the political history of the Spanish-American world of the first quarter of
the 19th century (and beyond). This has consequences for the bicentennials,
for «el liberalismo hispánico» and, in the end, for understanding
this period of Spanish and Latin America history.
