tiempo, habían ido accediendo a destacados cargos.
franquista.
Abstract: The images of another country that politicians and diplomats have
in mind are highly important in bilateral relations. They are decisive if the
legitimacy and profitableness of good relations come under scrutiny. The
Spanish images of Germany, which German diplomats sought to rectify,
were marked by fascist nostalgia and reservations about an allegedly weak democracy. Out of respect for the western allies, Germany
abstained from too close relations with its former Spanish comrades in
arms. Nevertheless, the Federal Republic was not willing to gamble away
the diplomatic advantage which arose from the sympathy of Spanish veterans
who had made it to important posts. German diplomats were neither
critically aware of the problematic National Socialist legacy nor of
the Franco regime’s lack of legitimacy.
