The «populist» movement Alternative für Deutschland, preceded and accompanied by an aggressive cultural «new right», is throwing Germany’s political and cultural system off balance. It challenges the «popular» nature of the traditional Volksparteien (christian-democratic, christian-social, and social democratic). It intends to restore full German political sovereignty within the European Union, as well as sovereignty over its own national history which, until now, has been told only by the victorious nations. It does not hide its ambitions for «cultural hegemony » in contrast to a (still) dominant left-wing and social-liberalist culture, proposing a new way of «being bourgeois and conservative». It counts on the historical significance and emotional effectiveness of the traditional terms Volk and völkisch through which it obsessively reaffirms its ethno-national identity and legitimates of the rejection of the foreigner/immigrant. Naturally, the reprise of the völkisch lexicon raises suspicions and protests because it has typically characterized Nazism. Though the «new right», contentiously insists on its difference from National Socialism, it claims for itself the status of that «conservative revolution» of the twenties and thirties that would have been kidnapped and betrayed by National Socialism. Thus, the «new right» has succeeded in tearing the left from its monopoly in criticizing the current system and has overturned its meaning. Paradoxically, it acknowledges the enemies of the radical left as its own: financial-capitalist neoliberalism, globalization, etc.
