Un momento clave en la llamada «cuestión de Palestina», uno
de los conflictos más significativos y duraderos de la historia contemporánea,
se vivió en 1947, cuando el Reino Unido transfirió a la ONU
su responsabilidad como potencia mandataria. La institución internacional
recomendó dividir el territorio entre judíos y palestinos, y establecer
un régimen internacional en Jerusalén; medidas que debían ser
puestas en práctica por la Comisión de Palestina. El diplomático Pablo
de Azcárate participó en este organismo y dirigió el grupo avanzado
que fue enviado a Jerusalén, pero diversos factores impidieron el
éxito de su misión y de la Comisión.

Abstract: A key moment in the so-called «question of Palestine», one of
the most significant and enduring conflicts in the contemporary history,
was in 1947, when the United Kingdom transferred to the UN its
responsibility as a mandatory power. The international institution recommended
to divide Palestine between Jews and Palestinians and to
establish an international regime in Jerusalem, measures that should
be implemented by the Palestine Commission. The diplomat Pablo de
Azcárate participated in this organization and led the advanced group
that was sent to Jerusalem, but several factors prevented the success of
his mission and of the Commission.
