En este trabajo se analizan los mecanismos de los que se valieron
un grupo de inversores franceses, el de los Péreire, para introducirse y
desarrollar diversas actividades empresariales en la península. En los
negocios en los que fundamentalmente se interesaron, el bancario y el
ferroviario, la acción del Estado estaba muy presente, de ahí que los hermanos
franceses buscasen unas relaciones privilegiadas con los círculos
de poder madrileños. Con este fin articularon una red de contactos sociales
que se ocuparon de proteger sus intereses en la Cámara de Diputados
durante la tramitación de las Leyes bancarias. Además, a lo largo del
decenio que aquí se estudia, colocaron en puestos estratégicos de sus
compañías a destacadas figuras públicas. Por último, dispusieron de un
instrumento privilegiado para salvaguardar sus inversiones: la dependencia
del Tesoro Público de los medios financieros foráneos.

Abstract: This article examines the resources and skills used by a French
investment group, the Péreire’s, to introduce themselves into several
entrepreneurial and industrial activities in Spain. The businesses they
were interested basically were Banking and Railways, two activities
strongly controlled by the State at that time. For that reason, the French
brothers Péreire were interested in maintaining strong relationships with
well connected and influential groups in Madrid. The Péreire’s organized
an efficient lobby network in the Spanish Parliament during the passing
procedure of the Banking Laws. In addition, in the whole analyzed
decade, they placed distinguished figures of the Spanish establishment
on strategic positions in their companies. Finally, they had a privileged tool to assure their investments: the foreign financial dependency of the
Spanish Treasury.
