Este artículo considera la aplicación de una perspectiva transnacional
al estudio del exilio en la Era de las Revoluciones. El objetivo
es doble: 1) reconocer los beneficios del enfoque transnacional para
el estudio del fenómeno del exilio en Europa y América en este periodo,
especialmente con el fin de entender la formación paralela del
liberalismo internacional y la contrarrevolución europea; 2) reflexionar
acerca de las limitaciones de este enfoque, especialmente si implica
desatender el marco nacional en un contexto de intensa construcción
nacional, como fue el de finales del siglo xviii y comienzos del xix. Una
interpretación que entienda a los exiliados meramente como agentes
transnacionales desdeña lo importante que para ellos era la nación, que
moldeaba tanto sus posturas políticas como sus identidades.

Abstract: This article interrogates the application of a transnational perspective
to the study of exile in the Age of Revolutions. The purpose is
two-fold: 1) to acknowledge the benefits of the transnational approach
for studying the phenomenon of exile in Europe and the Americas in
this period, especially in order to understand the parallel formation of
international liberalism and European counterrevolution; 2) to question
some of the limitations of this approach, especially if it means neglecting
the national framework in a context of intense nation-building,
like the late 18th- and early 19th-centuries. An interpretation that
understands exiles merely as transnational agents misses how important for them the nation was, for it shaped both their politics and their
identities
