Tres años después, a
checheno.

Abstract: Since the end of the XVIIIth century, there has been a tense relationship
between Chechenia and Russia. In 1991, while the Soviet Union was
dying, Chechenia declared herself unilaterally independent. Three years
later, at the end of 1994, Russia carried out a military intervention and
there began a war that lasted until the middle of 1996. After a brief stage
in which the confrontation subsided, Russia tried to intervene again in
1999 and opened a conflict that extends up to our days. Anyhow, the
presence of the islamist fundamentalism forms one of many keys that are
necessary to invoke to explain the present texture of the Chechenian dispute,
such as the imperial Russian logic and the geostrategic and geoeconomic
relevance of the region.
