Abstract: Until recently the United States has been perceived very negatively
by the conservative sectors of Spanish society. Besides being bound to
liberal inclinations and values, the American nation was cursed because
of the threat, synthesized in the Monroe Doctrine, that it always represented
for Spanish territorial possessions in America. Through the establishment
of the Franco regime, the old anti-American phantoms reappeared
strongly and the new State’s main actors did not hesitate in
showing their aversion to the US. Until the imperative of political survival
demanded the signing of the 1953 agreements, starting out from different motives and obsessions we find in the members of the Army, the
Church and Falange, a common rejection of the US.
