Abstract: The article surveys the theoretical impact of recent research on the
social. What it is described as a shift «from social history to the history of
the social» refers to the increasing recognition that the notion of society
has not derived from a better knowledge (and progress) in understanding
the mechanisms governing human affairs, but rather it was the result of a
fundamental reconceptualization of these through the categories of the
modern imaginary. Therefore, if society is not an objective entity, the above
shift puts in question not only the theoretical machinery of social causality,
but above all the whole epistemology on which the edifice of social
history has been built upon.
