Miguel de Santander es una figura imprescindible para la comprensión
de la religiosidad española en la crisis del Antiguo Régimen.
Predicador muy respetado, fue ganando peso en el círculo de eclesiásticos
cercanos a Godoy hasta ser promovido a obispo auxiliar de Zaragoza.
Durante la ocupación francesa, puso sus dotes oratorias al servicio
de las nuevas autoridades, legitimando el cambio dinástico y predicando
a favor de la paz. En las razones de esta colaboración, podemos rastrear
la mentalidad de un eclesiástico reformista que veía al clero como un
agente del Estado y a la institución monárquica como una forma de
mantener el orden y garantizar el desarrollo de la religión.

Abstract: Miguel de Santander represents a key figure in understanding
the Spanish religiosity during the crisis of the Old Regime. This
well respected
preacher gained importance in ecclesiastical circles in
favor of Godoy so as he was promoted to the auxiliary bishopric of
Zaragoza. During the French occupation, he puts his oratory skills
behind
the new authorities in order to legitimize the dynastic change mentality of a reforming ecclesiastic who saw the clergy as a civil servant
and the monarchical institution as a way to maintain order and to
ensure the development of worship.
