debate.
Abstract: This article analyses the nationalist conflict in Spain during the very
intense period from November 1918 to February 1919, when public life
revolved around demands for Catalan autonomy. It studies the splits in
the parties and the different components of Spanish nationalism. The
anti-Catalan movements headed by Liberal leaders, tradesmen and local
elites; negotiations inside and outside parliament; and the intervention of
the crown and the army are discussed. The period highlights, firstly, the
vigour of Spanish nationalism, which was able to attract significant support
from public opinion; and secondly, the real possibilities of agreement
amongst the leading political actors. However, such agreement never materialised due in part to the Catalanists’ intransigence and the
manner in which the debate became increasingly bogged down in symbolic
elements.
