Abstract: This article analizes the idea of political representation during the
period of the crisis of the Spanish monarchy (1808-1812). As a first
point, it takes into account the distinction made by the authors of the
Spanish Enlightenment between monarchy and nation, and its consequences
for placing America in the conception of the nation by the
end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries.
Since the Spanish Constitution of 1812 defined the nation as the reunion
of all the Spaniards of both hemispheres, this articles revisits the contradictions
and solutions offered on both sides of the Spanish Atlantic
for organizing political representation in a monarchy identified again
with the nation.
