Abstract: Most of the ideologues of moderate positions under the liberal
regime were prominent authors in the field of aesthetics theory, and
contributed to the establishment of the Romantic canon in Spain. This
article analyzes the influence of the aesthetic insights of Alberto Lista,
Nicomedes Pastor Díaz and Alcalá Galiano, among others, in their theory
of representative government. The topic under scrutiny is the aim of
Spanish liberals of erecting a legitimate aristocracy in the emerging post-revolutionary
order, for which the reflection on the moral function of
the poet was regarded as crucial. The article shows the insurmountable difficulties of such a task, and explains from this perspective the ambiguity
with which moderates addressed the issue of the representation of the
middle classes in the constitutional consensus of the period. The article
concludes in the necessity of rewriting the history of conservative liberalism
by confronting it with the persistence of «doceañismo» [a current
of opinion favorable to the reestablishment of the principles of the
1812 Constitution], overcoming thus the tendency to study its thinkers
through the eyes of French doctrinarism.
