Abstract: The signature of the Peace Agreement between the Islamist government
and the Southern insurgence in Sudan marks the end of a civil
war that has lasted for more than 20 years. The process that is now beginning
aims to create a new Sudan in which political, ethnic and religious
plurality would be recognized in a democratic framework. However, the
realization of this process depends on several factors. It demands concessions
from both sides and is resisted by some elements in the Islamist
movement and inside the different armed groups in the South. It also
requires that political and armed conflicts between the national government
and the regional forces be tackled and last, it necessitates that the
bilateral agreement be followed by a national treaty in which the political
opposition would be allowed to participate.
