En este artículo se sostiene que las disputas públicas en torno a la
memoria histórica de los chilenos han estado fuertemente condicionadas
por el carácter de la transición a la democracia, que supuso la convivencia
del poder civil democrático con el poder militar. Las iniciativas del
Estado dieron lugar a debates sobre la historia reciente así como a otros
relativos a la aplicación de la justicia. El ex dictador Augusto Pinochet
fue un factor de bloqueo e inhibición de la verdad y la justicia hasta que
su detención en Londres, en 1998, abrió una nueva etapa en la memoria
histórica nacional.

Abstract: This article argues that public debate about historical memory of
Chile has been strongly affected by the nature of the transition to democracy,
which led to the coexistence of civilian democratic power with military
power. State initiatives on this matter led to discussions about
recent history as well as on the application of justice. Former dictator
Augusto Pinochet became an obstacle to the full attainment of truth and
justice until his arrest in London in 1998 opened a new phase in the
national historical memory.
