Small Business Services in Asian Countries brings together presentations made at the meeting organized by the Donor Agency Committee for Small Enterprise Development held in Hanoi, Vietnam in April 2000. The book opens with a comprehensive introduction. Two general chapters cover market development of business services and describe experience of the way these services have operated, problems they have encountered and how they might be rendered more effective with wider outreach to the small and medium enterprise sector. The book includes cases from Hyderabad in India, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Pakistan. In addition there are cases describing successful country-wide programmes in improving poultry production smallholdings in Bangladesh, as well as examples of the successful marketing of private sector, small scale products and a treadle pump disseminated on a mass scale in that country. The chapters deal with major problems inherent in starting and strengthening business development services that are responsive to the needs of small enterprises. The book considers such questions as the extent to which programmes should be subsidised or operate on a commercial basis and how their effectiveness can be measured in relation to the sustainability and impact of the programme. The Donor Agency Committee appends guiding principles for donor intervention in the promotion and strengthening of sustainable business services for small enterprise developments.
