Resumen

Fighting to break the shackles of everyday life, Muslim women the world over are speaking out, striving to move their lives out of silence, marginalisation and explicit exclusion. Tired of being treated as inferior citizens, there is a genuine need for sexual justice whilst preserving Muslim ideals. In this engaging study, Dr Amina Wadud, an Afro-American Muslim herself, introduces the feminist movement in Islam and delves into its challenges, its textual foundations in the Qur'an and its achievements. Beginning with her own place in the effort for greater justice for women in Islam, Wadud goes on tackle a number of pertinent issues, including the state of Muslim women's studies as a discipline in mainstream academia and the role of Muslim women in the domestic space. Brimming with personal experiences, such as when the author was famously invited to deliver the Friday sermon in both New York and South Africa (a primarily male role), this book exudes hope but also highlights the prejudices and anger that women can face when they try to stand up for themselves. In the face of such resistance, Wadud asserts there is still much to do in order to achieve what she perceives as a woman's fundamental right: to be perceived as 'fully human with the intellectual capacity to contribute to a holistic understanding of what it means to have a relationship with both the divine and other humans'. "Inside the Gender Jihad" is a major contribution to the debate on women and Islam and will appeal to all those interested in the challenges facing Muslim women in today's society.
