Resumen

Erroneous and misleading information are not new and pre-date the internet era. As well as political, religious and ideological bias, errors occur that are perpetuated without question. In 1969 it was reported that Linda McCartney nee Eastman was part of the Eastman Kodak photographic empire. The former was the result of a misplaced decimal point in the printing process, the latter attributed to a journalist who put into print an unverified assumption. With the advent of widespread electronic communications not much has changed. Mistakes and bias in the media are accepted as a fact of life but what has changed is that everyone now has the opportunity to become involved in creating and perpetuating myths and mis-information. The result is that those of us seeking to provide quality data have to wade through so much more rubbish and spend more time separating the gold from the dross. The new interactive and collaborative Web 2.0 technologies in particular have the potential to impact in a negative way on the integrity of information, often disguising who is responsible for which piece of information. This badly needed book, written by a renowned expert, will look at how errors and misleading information can occur, the role of human factors and technology, and most importantly how those of us working with information can ensure that the information we use is fit for purpose. The contents include: human factors affecting information integrity; the impact of technologies on information integrity; legal implications; fit for purpose: assessment criteria; tools for assessing quality; assessing the quality of content aggregators; the effect of search strategies on quality; and, desktop research tools for documenting and citing your research.
